The kuro tomesode is the most formal kimono a married woman wears. It is black with a coloured design on the skirt. There are five white
mon (crests), two on the front and three on the back.

A kuro tomesode is worn with a white silk under-kimono, creating a heightened dramatic effect of a white and black contrast (
Yamanaka, 1982: 53).

Sleeve lengths change with formality and with age. As a woman ages, her sleeves become shorter. The colours of the pattern also become more subdued, as these three kimono demonstrate.
