The RRN demonstrates a fundamental shift in the way cultural heritage research is conducted. The network facilitates collaboration and creates relationships between community researchers, institutions where cultural heritage is held, and researchers with an interest in and knowledge of this material. These relationships are based on the principles of respect for the cultural values, customary laws and cultural knowledge of the originating communities as well as a respect for Museum professionals. Through reciprocal networking, the communities and institutions will be able to make invaluable contributions to each other to improve the information presently available.

The intentions of the RRN are to respect cultural values, to support the integration of clearer understandings of First Nations’ customary laws and cultural knowledge into standard museum practices and philosophies, and to further global discussion about cultural knowledge and intellectual property.
