This week’s recommended readings are a departure from the previous week’s theme of food. This diverse selection presents elements of light, spirit, honesty, and an artist who embodied all of these traits, Emily Carr.

Ariel:
“A Promise is a Promise” by Robert Munsch & Michael Kusugak. Art by Vladyana Krykorka.
Reason: Robert Munsch is an incredible children’s author and this book is another one of Munsch’s classics. This story is a delightful read with wonderful drawings to accompany it. The book involves Inuit culture which provides a learning aspect to this story. This is a fun book to introduce to young readers as well as for those nostalgic for childhood books.

Meghan:
“Spirit of Haida Gwaii- Bill Reid’s Masterpiece”, by Ulli Steltzer (Foreword by Bill Reid, Introduction by Robin Laurence)
Reason: I was drawn to this book because it gives a behind the scenes tour of Bill Reid’s famous sculpture, ‘The Spirit of Haida Gwaii’. The sculpture, a six meter long bronze canoe overflowing with creatures from Haida mythology (which is featured on the Canadian $20 bill) is majestically captured by Ulli Steltzer’s striking black and white photography.

Thomas
“Light at the Edge of the World,” by Wade Davis
Reason: Wade Davis has led a life of adventure and travel that few could dare dream of. A brilliant anthropologist, Davis has created a compelling argument to treasure the differences between people, showing through the studies of Peruvian sacred plants and Haitian zombification rituals the value of traditional knowledge and world views.
