Light, Spirit, Promises, and Emily Carr- Recommended Readings

This week’s recommended readings are a departure from the previous week’s theme of food.  This diverse selection presents elements of light, spirit, honesty, and an artist who embodied all of these traits, Emily Carr.

Promise

Ariel:

“A Promise is a Promise” by Robert Munsch & Michael Kusugak. Art by Vladyana Krykorka.

Reason: Robert Munsch is an incredible children’s author and this book is another one of Munsch’s classics. This story is a delightful read with wonderful drawings to accompany it. The book involves Inuit culture which provides a learning aspect to this story. This is a fun book to introduce to young readers as well as for those nostalgic for childhood books.

Meghan:Spirit “Spirit of Haida Gwaii- Bill Reid’s Masterpiece”, by Ulli Steltzer (Foreword by Bill Reid, Introduction by Robin Laurence)

Reason: I was drawn to this book because it gives a behind the scenes tour of Bill Reid’s famous sculpture, ‘The Spirit of Haida Gwaii’.  The sculpture, a six meter long bronze canoe overflowing with creatures from Haida mythology (which is featured on the Canadian $20 bill) is majestically captured by Ulli Steltzer’s striking black and white photography.

Marisa:

Reason: What characterizes Canadian cuisine? This is a question I am asked again and again when travelling or living in other countries. Visitors to Vancouver often ask the same thing, they want to know where to find a typical Canadian meal or where to have a truly Westcoast dining experience. In Vancouver, the food we love is inherently multicultural. This international influence makes us creative and inspired

in the kitchen. Our British Columbian context adds a dash of tradition to our dining, which can be found in local staples such as cedar plank salmon and braised maple butternut squash. Vancouver is home to an urban farming movement that is growing faster than we can keep track.

AraxiPeople here appreciate organic and local produce, making us passionate about fresh ingredients. Each of these things contributes to our distinct food identity as ‘Vancouverites’, British Columbians, ‘Westcoasters’ or Canadians.

More Recommended Readings

Following up on last week’s Recommended Readings, here are a few more favorite books from the MOA Shop.

white-slaves-of-maquinna-john-r-jewitts-narrative-of-capture-and-confinement-at-nootka

Helen:

“White Slaves of Maquinna: John R. Jewitt’s Narrative of Capture and Confinement at Nootka,” from Heritage

Reason: A riveting, uproarious read!  Two enthusiastic thumbs up!  A must read for anyone who is interested in what happens when roles are reversed and a European becomes the slave of a non-European.  Most striking is that fact that Jewitt still manages to be utterly condescending in his portrayal of his captors, demonstrating his entrenched sense of superiority.
