Community Connections

The Museum of Anthropology has a long history of collaborating with communities to further knowledge and understanding of world cultures. Through exhibits, public programs, research, and teaching and training initiatives, MOA provides opportunities for individual or collective expressions of diversity on an ongoing basis. Much of MOA's programming focuses on the First Nations of the Northwest Coast of B.C., whose collections are most visible in the galleries, and with whom the Museum has collaborated since its inception in 1947 - beginning with the extraordinary relationship established between Kwakwaka'wakw artists Mungo and Abaya Martin, and the first Director and Curator of the Museum, Dr. Harry and Mrs. Audrey Hawthorn, respectively. (For a detailed history of the Museum's early years, see "A Labour of Love: The Making of the Museum of Anthropology, UBC, The First Three Decades, 1947-76" by Audrey Hawthorn, available in the Museum Shop.)

In this section, you'll find some resources created out of MOA's many collaborative activities with First Nations and other cultural communities around the world. These resources include multilingual guides to the galleries; First Nations territorial and language maps of B.C.; guidelines for repatriation or management of culturally sensitive materials; and suggested readings. Please note that this section is constantly evolving to reflect community needs, and is by no means exhaustive! Specific requests for additional information may be directed to info@moa.ubc.ca.
