William White: My Ancestors are still Dancing
As part of a "living" exhibition entitled My Ancestors are Still Dancing, Tsimshian weaver William White took up residence at the Museum in the summer of 2002. The artist set up his loom and pattern board in one of the public galleries, alongside a display of his weavings, some 19th-century robes from MOA's collection, and historical and contemporary photographs of people wearing Chilkat regalia. There he worked for several hours each day to complete a child’s-sized Chilkat robe commissioned for the Museum through a Canada Council acquisitions grant. The project gave Museum visitors and staff a rare opportunity to observe the distinctive techniques of Chilkat weaving, and to speak with William personally about the significance of his work and the traditions that shape it.
