WAM! World Art Market
WAM! World Art Market
Inspired by long-established markets such as the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Cultural Survival Bazaar, and the Maori Market in Wellington, New Zealand, the Museum of Anthropology recently introduced an exciting new initiative. The World Art Market (WAM!) took place over two days in September in a giant tent on the grounds of the Museum, and became the place for visitors to experience the art, craft, music, dance, and cuisine of indigenous peoples from around the world.
Besides being a venue for sales, WAM! provided a forum for indigenous artists to exchange information and ideas. For our more than 2,500 visitors, it was an opportunity to experience artist workshops, demonstrations, performances, and other amazing activities.
The first annual WAM! occurred on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19, 2010, from 10 am to 5 pm each day. Artists sold direct to the public; MOA did not earn commissions on any sales by WAM! participating artists. Dates for WAM! 2011 are now being set, and we look forward to putting on an even more exciting market next year!
In the meantime, the MOA Shop will continue to feature a selection works by WAM! participants to reflect the diversity of MOA’s collections, and to highlight the extraordinary talent and creativity of contemporary artists.
WAM! Mission Statement
The World Art Market (WAM!) endeavors to support, encourage, and promote world indigenous arts and cultures, with particular emphasis on those of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. As an annual event, WAM! creates economic and cultural initiatives that encourage excellence in both traditional and non-traditional practices throughout the year.
WAM! is open, by invitation, to indigenous artists from around the world. A limited number of tables are available for non-profit organizations and co-operatives. Registered artists will receive detailed instructions for setting up display areas, entry for juried prizes, and other activities that will take place during WAM!
